Speak to me

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Bob Gauvreau 2014

There is a quiet voice.
It speaks gently.

“When you are moving:
aboard a boat
about your business
above the clouds
across the meadow
after the storm
against the wind
along the pier

amid all suffering
among that group
around the house
as soon you can
at the stroke of midnight
before the dawn
behind the eight ball
below the ground
beneath the sea
beside family members
between a rock and a hard place
beyond this realm,
I call out to you.
Speak to me

“When it feels like you are:
down on and out
excluding all reason
beyond all hope
in the heat of the moment
inside yourself
minus the power
near your end

off center
on your worst day
opposite the crowd
outside the clique
over the hill
past familiar surroundings
through, but the pain comes again
toward the wrong conclusion
under pressure,
I call out to you.
Speak . . . to . . . me”
