remember, only you remember

…remember only you remember…
together in places
we left traces of when we last spoke

about make-believe races
purported cases
of out of sync paces

then the laces fall
and if now we talk at all

your memory of loving me fades away
until the day

I close my eyes and relive each day
…remember, only you remember…

When you decided to send
a valentine to a friend
it said we would be together until the end

I cherished that because what you say
returns to me each May
– an early summer wave –

A sigh escapes and  I roll up in a ball
with a bruised soul in a darkened hall

mocking an ego that chases
your baggage to places
we walked, toward vases
of blooms in stately rooms of oak

I alone have our memories
as you have chosen to delete yours of me

I remind myself in tears,
“Remember! Only you remember!”
