Spoken in fear, love, anger

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Words bottled up inside
leak out when frustrations collide
with feelings of desperation.

What I want to say through the fray
run to your ears in a melodramatic way
when professing my undying service.

Reaction and getting even with you
as we quarrel over who is right or more true
makes frustration echo against the walls.

What is spoken in fear
separates our communication.

What is spoken in love
is vulnerability, such as it is.

What is spoken in anger
hastens relationship pitfalls.

The patterns of all I think and do today
are colored by what I freely say.
