My muse

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

The truth is that I love you.
I do not always wax poetic.
I wrote you a note.
It says: “I love you.”

I leave it on your mirror.
I tape it to your favorite drink
in the fridge.
You smile and wonder if I am more than I am.

You are my Muse.
Whenever you laugh I get excited.
I want to please you.
Do you like it when I want to be near you?

This is not a creative way forward.
It is direct and to the point.
If you want me to draw  a picture
with daisies and hearts . . . I could do that.

The things I make with my hands are mighty.
They are also intricate.
I can cook your favorite dinner.
I can play the piano and sing for you.

Do you have a favorite band
that plays all night long?
We could go there and I would take you.
Just give me some notice to schedule our date.

You tell me that you don’t want flowers or candy.
But when I bring them anyway you are pleased.
I think you appreciate all the things that I do for you.
I think that you love me, too.

You are my Muse.
Whenever you laugh I get excited.
I want to please you.
