Pre-recorded future

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Just when you are told your struggle there
has reached the time of victory,
that is your sign to prepare
for the worst days to come.

You can guard the children
with a rod or staff or pistol,
but they can’t survive unless you
store up clean water.

We call you through silent messages.
You see it in stones from high above.
You see the way crops form symbols.
There is no other way for us to cry.

The retreating lords of commerce
have been discarding all our pleas for help,
and concentrating their efforts on re-writing history.
Don’t be distracted by this game.

We are resilient here and claim you as our heroes
because you are the hope of our hearts,
and our own children, after all.
So, persevere in your duties.

We call you through silent messages.
You see it in buildings from high above.
They have been constructed in such a way
as to lead you to our graves.

Even if all you find are the remnants of our bones,
we will cheer your arrival out of the depths of our despair.
The very day and hour your progeny stands above us
and brings us to light, we will know our freedom.

So, while you fight to stay alive, and protected and free,
reject the pre-recorded future the lords of commerce advertise.
Train your children to journey far from home
and to succeed in rescuing us from oblivion.
