Before the sober vow

Still a child, over thirty,
a good friend to the helpless.
Just ask. Anyone will tell you.
No one could see the danger
in a little exotic mind trip
below the summer stars.

But radical ideas
are transferred the same way
a family pet runs
into the house
and drops hidden grains of sand
from its paws
which embed themselves
into an unsuspecting carpet.

The child entertains
ideas
from far away meadows
that promise calm
and insight
despite their innate design
to expand and implant themselves
with blooms of
despair.

All the power of the psyche
does not see the shadow of pain
elongating and enticing.
Before the sober vow is spoken,
a promise of  integrity
and service and honor,
the hidden grain tumbles
into an avalanche of dejection.

The words we longed to hear are
now shrouded in peculiar apologies
uncomfortable hugs
faint smiles and real tears,
bringing on an assembly
of  silence and grim faces.
