Through the Entrance

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

In veiled affliction
a blight of well wishes replaces hugs,
transforms itself into burden,
la bête noire de journée claire.

Life plans in calamity
forming deviant curses upon the lips
as despair awaits
that moment of destruction
from a master of disaster.

Downfall in an abyss
because of each fatal attraction
to contemptible misery,
powerlessness –
a pest with no pesticide.

Plagues, poisons and ruination
are gentle compared to this scourge
of relentless torment
of the trial of the mind,
and in its wake the counting of troubles and woes.

Now I leave through the Entrance
while hopeless dreams faint at my undoing,
dissolved is the venom of argument,
echoing woeful cries
in a lament of the mysterious tomorrowland.
