Alone, together

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

She got for herself the perfect partner
He was a prince . . .  among men.
He saw in her a golden light at the end of clouded journey.

She worked hard to make things right,
to be a caretaker of her future,
to serve the common good amongst other females in the group.

He woke up each morning with a promise to self:
to share his talents with every needy person and
give aid and support to the downtrodden.

She remembered that the world was lonely,
almost as dire as she was,
wanting no facsimile of love.

He sacrificed and labored daily
to meet his obligations and
to be better than yesterday.

No matter how intricate the task,
she carefully followed the directions
unto the end, with a caring touch.

There is no reward at the end of the day,
except their being alone, together.
And their works would be mutually praised.
