Victimization of the bystander

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Standing there
a bystander sees
the slow-motion action unfold
Criminals slid into position
Victim changed focus
surprising heat and anger
being caught off guard
vulnerable

Which one hurts?
The actors in pain
wielding sharp knives
demanding attention
leveraging fear for power?
The hapless victim in panic mode
living in trepidation
inside an Edgar Allan Poe nightmare?

That yellow haired man
the overcoat strange woman in sunglasses
walked with a limp?
screamed bloody murder
cried the whole time they fought
passed out after the first? punch
They just acted out
Right . . .

Marshals caught them both
confession of a kind of Bonnie and Clyde
surrendered after killing
so many people lost
the psychology of the act of murder.
Why was the time right for THIS victim to die?
“talked too much”
the MOTIVATION for  murder.
And that scares the bystander.
