Freedom FROM Choice

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Humans are creatures
that do much more than the apes
which also bemuse.

If a group member
deserves death, only humans
ask others to choose.

The curse of murder
by an animal creature
is meted in haste.

There is no mercy
no turning back, for cousin
Earthlings have distaste.

Humans at the brink,
judging a criminal’s life,
at times have turned back.

A jury verdict,
an example of others
choosing white or black.

Man loves this option
of being told what to do.
The stepchild of rights.

Inaction guarded.
His pursuit of happiness.
Forced to switch? He fights!

In this dimension
many do not want to act.
“Leave it to the pros.”

As long as we die
for the sake of freedom’s fire
our liberty grows.
