Do you know the intimate secrets of
Edgar Lee Masters,
Edna St. Vincent Millay,
or Wallace Stevens?
Their private thoughts are on billboards
and echoed in Earth’s halls of learning.
Today, others have inked the names
of these additions to the list of verse giants:
and Sonia Sanchez.
Their public moments are on video
and echoed along the streets of New York.
Here, far from the metropolis, my cultured band and I
read the giants’ exploits, foibles, and fears.
We lay to rest the structure of:
Cacophony versus Alliteration –
Harmony versus Rhythmic Allegory –
Onomatopoeia versus Rhyme speak.
It takes a real clever hand to write
compelling verse with flair,
while a genius merely describes what the soul sees.
when together in the by and by,
the memoirs of my cultured band
will be praised by all the giants.
With the music of the quatrain,
rap, nu-wave, mix, scratch, spinback and juggle will be their gifts
from all the best poets like me.
