Same as midnight

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Early morning
same as midnight.
Colors grey
no where to run.

Call of darkness
to the slumber
but the night bird
beats the sun

Here we are now
Same as shadows
with no trails
left to run

Count our blessings.
Watchful sleepers
wait for the starting
morning gun

How we wonder at the bright stars
All those memories. All those fears.
All she wanted was one moment
With her love once again

Now the breaking
of the silence
is her heart’s
pounding blast

One more day when
she’s without him
another lonely
thought to cast.

Water’s boiling.
Coffee’s making
and the smell
comes on her fast.

What comes next
no one hears it.
Lightning quick
their storied past.

Why, oh, why the pain keeps coming
till we meet on distant shores?
Now her eyes fill with aching
as her tears stain the floors.

How we wonder at the bright stars
All those memories. All those tears.
All she wanted was one moment
With her love once again

Early morning
same as midnight.
Colors grey
no where to run
