The Puppetmaster’s lamentation

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

Within every person is a string-puller,
a king-maker, and a doppelgänger.

Humans love to pretend
and to be in a position of power.

Puppetmasters know this feeling.
Ventriloquists and silent film producers, too.

The realm of manipulation is alluring.
Enchanting the audience is a form of power.

Suspend the logic of what is real
in order to tell a tale or persuade the psyche.

The world once lived on the head of a pin.
Then a flower petal. Today it’s the head of a pin, again.

Why are urbanites choosing tribal tattoos?
Today’s tribal villagers only want virtual ink.

Why all this reverting to what once was?
Information seems to be the fuel.

Experience is no longer walking through a society.
There is little attraction for food and smell and touch knowledge.

Wasn’t it marvelous to have 2 real friends a few years ago?
More than one hundred now is common somehow.

That is too many strings to pull for one person nowadays.
Here, exposed, is the digital skeleton of modern mesmerism.

To have so much of what is not there
is a virtual enigma. Literally!

I want more than anything to just talk to you,
in person or over the phone, with my own voice.

My look-alike says, “I heard you,” on some screen.
But, I really would rather listen to you.
