Fiery madness

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

A thank you unspoken
that word of encouragement omitted
the disapproving look from the designated hero

Smiles given to estranged family members
and enthusiastic praise for their lost souls
with a pat on the head for these open arms

Mumbled remarks about intelligence
errant comments on vulnerabilities
exasperated sighs for important-to-me announcements

Avoidance posturing for distance in place of friendliness
some jumbled notes returned with stains
taking credit without thanking the team

What is burning inside,
a force so petty and insolent
which causes hurtful behaviors? A fiery madness.

Have the burdens of being overappreciated mounted up
so that none of your company is comforting?
Another ‘be patient’ season is carried on the winds

Many subtle ways for reaching into that selfish nature
memes and posters and emails and gentle conversations
you smile while ignoring this precious counsel

Here is the corporate game in our house
the house game in our marketplace
the marketplace game in our corporate workplace.

Rejected, the outsiders now speak in cold tones
unable to thwart that self-destructive inferno
voices vibrate through the feathery ash.
