Assemble Instruction

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

a fistful of donut
then grab a cup
it’s usually Styrofoam
milk or cream sensations
remember the sugar,
remember the little stir rod

what to do first?
Take a sip! Take a bite!
sugar and spice and everything nice
fried sweet dough in a Colombian emulsion
going down, going down now,
going down

one bite sloshed around
every tooth now caramel colored
piercing the pastry
knifing the nosh
crushing the cruller
it’s all dry?

leave the last bite
look for the urn
make a beeline for the spout
one more cup
streaming darkness
cream sensations reappear

sugar gyrations
okay, one more donut
put them all together
that’s how we assemble focus for this morning
and lift the veil of slumber and fast
to witness the sun and speak again
