Reading your letters

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

I often hear your voice when the season’s change.
There is abundant yearning for your presence.
Reading your letters is not enough to calm my fears,
though I regard them lovingly.

I sleep
with anticipation,
with a vision of our meeting again,
with a hope that your slumber is the same as mine.

From distances too cruel to measure,
from tastes too polarized to mix,
from attitudes too strident to harmonize,
filled with hope do I say your name still.

Sleep takes me over
with no warning,
with no consolation of loneliness passing,
with no hint that you could still be mine.

This anxious wind colors my sky.
It rustles the leaves through the trees.

And every turn of Mother Earth
spreads echoes of the uneasiness in my heart and soul.

I often hear your voice when the season’s change.
There is abundant yearning for your presence.
Reading your letters is not enough to calm my fears
through so many eventides.

I sleep again
with anticipation of parting’s end,
with a vision of our meeting again.

I often hear your voice when the season’s change.
There is abundant yearning for your presence.
Reading your letters is not enough to calm my fears,
though I regard them lovingly.

When will I see you again?
