I am your strawberry

by Lawrence J. J. Leonard

I am your strawberry.
You can smear me down, spoon me in,
gobble me up all in one bite.

If you cut me, you may savor me,
or freeze me overnight.

You can dip me in white chocolate,
and mix me in ice cream.

Just cut deep and hull me out.
See how I was formed?
Now, choose what to swallow
and what to throw away.

Do you need me?
Just take me now.
I don’t last long in the heat.

Your fingers feel my bruises.
My seeds dot your teeth.

With each bite you take
I am as rich as you remembered,
as ripe as you hoped,
as full as you anticipated,
as delicious as you expected.

There isn’t much time.
